A commitment to treatment advances and innovation
The Fox Lab focuses on mapping and modulating brain circuits to create new pathways to treatment of movement disorders, epilepsy, depression, and more.

The Fox Lab is happy to be a founding member of The Center for Brain Circuit Therapeutics, a joint initiative across the departments of neurology, psychiatry, neurosurgery, and neuroradiology, all located within the Hale Building for Transformative Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Neurosciences Center.

A passion for research

Michael D. Fox, MD, PhD, is the founding Director of the Center for Brain Circuit Therapeutics at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. He is also the inaugural Raymond D. Adams Distinguished Chair of Neurology and the Kaye Family Research Director of Psychiatric Brain Stimulation.
He completed a degree in Electrical Engineering at Ohio State University, an MD and PhD at Washington University in St. Louis, and Neurology Residency and Movement Disorders Fellowship at Mass Gen Brigham. Clinically, he specializes in the use of invasive and noninvasive brain stimulation for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric diseases.
Dr. Fox’s research focuses on developing new treatments for brain disease by understanding brain circuits, brain lesions, and the effects of neuromodulation. His papers have been cited over 50,000 times and he has won awards across the fields of neurology, psychiatry, and brain stimulation, including the inaugural Trailblazer Prize for Clinician Scientists from the NIH foundation.
Deep Brain Stimulation
DBS is a neurosurgical intervention to apply brain stimulation treatment for patients whose neurological or psychiatric symptoms are not ideally controlled by routine treatments like medications and therapy.
Transcranial Magenetic Stimulation
TMS is a non-invasive brain stimulation treatment for patients whose psychiatric or neurological symptoms have not improved with routine treatments like medications and therapy.
Neuromodulation Education and Training Program
The Center for Brain Circuit Therapeutics offers comprehensive training in repetitive TMS for Psychiatry and Neurology clinical and research fellows, Psychiatry and Neurology residents, and interested medical students rotating in Psychiatry and Neurology as well as training in Brain Circuit Therapeutics.
Faculty and Team:
Our lab and center consist of a multidisciplinary team of researchers.
What sets us apart?
In the Center for Brain Circuit Therapeutics, we treat both neurological and psychiatric symptoms as brain circuit problems. We use a multi-disciplinary approach and offer a variety of neuromodulation therapies to target these brain circuits for symptom relief. This unique approach fosters innovation, collaboration and new perspectives on delivering better treatments for patients with brain disorders. We are one of the few centers in the world to offer the full range of neuromodulation treatments including DBS, TMS, and MRI-guided focused ultrasound. Bringing these treatments together ensures the right patient gets the right treatment. It also helps advance the development of new treatments.
Dr. Fox’s Current Publications
“Neuroscience is by far the most exciting branch of science because the brain is the most fascinating object in the universe. Every human brain is different – the brain makes each human unique and defines who he or she is.”
